ROAD SIGNS OF IDAHO

All photos taken by Mark O'Neil unless otherwise noted

Updated August 25, 2003

INTERSTATE SIGNS

One of the last interstate signs in Idaho with the state name on it. (Photo by Joe Koehler).

Older wooden interstate sign. I-15W became I-86 in 1978. (Photo by Michael Summa).

Nirvana for sign collectors - a large stack of obsolete wooden interstate signs with the state names. I-80N became I-84 in 1978. This photo was taken in 1983, so these signs sat undisturbed for five years! (Photo by Michael Summa).

US HIGHWAY SIGNS

This sign was created after AASHTO relaxed its specifications in 1956. It is a 16" x 16" aluminum sign with a Scotchlite reflective surface, and is dated August 1957 on back. (Photo by Michael Summa).

Embossed cut-out US highway marker from Idaho - probably from the 1930s. (Collection of Robert Edgar).

STATE HIGHWAY SIGNS

Current style Idaho state route marker. Compare this sign with the one immediately below. Notice the smaller 'IDAHO' and a more generalized border (my collection).

Slightly older state route marker. This sign is dated 1974 (my collection).

An older style black on white state route marker. This style sign was used from the late 1940's into the 1960's. It is still used on big green sign assemblies, but not as freestanding reassurance signs. This particular sign is probably from the 1960's given the fact that it has a Scotchlite reflective background (Photo by Joe Koehler)

Another older state route sign. This particular sign is 16" x 16" aluminum, but does not have a reflective surface. It is dated October 1955 on back (Photo by Michael Summa).
