INTERSTATE SIGNS

(April 2000) Lafayette, IN. Current style Interstate signs have the numbers as big as they can be.

This appears to be a new interstate sign with the state name. Signs with "INDIANA" are quite rare on the road (Photo by Joe Koehler).

Indianapolis, IN. Is AASHTO adding suffixes to Interstates again? No, I-65 and I-70 run concurrent through downtown Indianapolis with a flurry of ramps. This sign directs the traveller to the ramp leading to I-65 SOUTH and I-70 WEST (Photo by Joe Koehler).

US HIGHWAY SIGNS

(March 2003) South Bend, IN. US-6 has been designated the Grand Army of the Republic Highway. Indiana posts GAR Highway signs at most reassurance assemblies (Photo by Tom Weinkauf).

Silkscreened US highway sign from the 1950's or early 60's. This sign is aluminum and is 16" x 16" (My collection).

(1986) Brimfield, IN. Older silkscreened cutout sign still standing. The IN-9 sign appears to be a 16" x 16" sign. Both signs were probably posted in the late 50's or early 60's, and both have been replaced (Photo by Michael Summa).

STATE HIGHWAY SIGNS

(April 2000) Current style of Indiana route markers. Indiana has used this style since the late-40's or early 50's.

(April 2000) Three-digit routes use an extended 30" sign.

(April 2000) State route signs on big green signs are identical to free-standing signs.

This sign is kind of a mystery. According to owner Joe Koehler, this is an Indiana sign - if so, it might be an interim sign between the current style and the older map style.

(Summer 1976) Original Indiana state route marker. Like Illinois, Indiana used a map on its state route signs. However, Indiana did not carry the design over to flat signs of the 1950's like Illinois did. This style was retired in the late 1940's. The Chicago Skyway sign was probably added in the mid-1950's - it didn't hold up nearly as well as the Indiana sign. This assembly was photographed, still in service, in 1976 by Michael Summa.

(March 2003) South Bend, IN. US-33 was truncated from Niles, MI to Goshen, IN a few years ago. Parts of former US-33 were renumbered IN-933 in South Bend. INDOT got fairly lazy in changing the signs in downtown South Bend! (Photo by Tom Weinkauf).

OTHER HIGHWAY SIGNS

(February 2000) New Buffalo, MI. Yes, you read the location correctly. Indiana places its toll trailblazers in neighboring states. This is an older trailblazer that still uses the 'E' and 'W' for East and West. Indiana had planned a North-South toll road, but that was scrapped with the advent of the Interstate system.
