INTERSTATE HIGHWAY SIGNS

Current Massachusetts interstate signs use numbers that are as big as possible, thus leaving no room for the state name (Photo courtesy of AA Roads).

Older Massachuesetts insterstate sign with the state name. These are quickly disappearing from the landscape (Photo by Joe Koehler).

US HIGHWAY SIGNS

Older 1970's era US highway signs using Massachusetts' fonts and bearing the DPW logo (Photo by Michael Summa).

Cutout US highway signs abbreviated the state name rather then try to cram the full name in the crown. Note the cats eye reflectors and the lack of mounting holes. The sign was mounted from a bracket on the back of the sign. This sign is from the 1930's or early 40's (Collection of Robert Edgar).

STATE HIGHWAY SIGNS

Current state highway signs continue the simple design that goes back to the beginning (Photo courtesy of AA Roads)

State route marker from the late 70's or early 80's. It uses FHWA fonts, but still bears the DPW logo. The DPW logo was dropped in the late 80's or early 90's. This sign is aluminum and is 24" x 24" (My collection).

Older state route sign. This sign is from the 50's or early 60's and it uses a crushed-glass reflectorization. The sign is 16" x 16" and is made of wood. (Collection of Andrew Osbourne)

Unlike most states that use route markers and arrow signs, Massachusetts used the elaborate signs with no Interstate, US or state designations. Directional signs looked like this into the 90's (Photo courtesy of AA Roads).

Older 1970's version of MA's directional markers. This sign uses MA fonts. Note the older MassPike sign below the directionals (Photo by Michael Summa).

OTHER ROUTE SIGNS

1950's era blue Massachusetts Turnpike sign still standing in the 1970's. This wooden sign features the older detailed Pilgrim hat and MA fonts. Note the Mass Tpk Authority logo at the bottom righthand corner of the sign. (Photo by Michael Summa).
